Powerlifting is the sport VBT was practically invented for. Three lifts, one goal, and a nervous system that has to peak on a specific Saturday.

Why velocity fits powerlifting

Everything about powerlifting rewards precision. Missing a load by five percent is the difference between the podium and eighth place. VBT gives you a load-velocity relationship for each of your three lifts, and that relationship is what removes guesswork from the last twelve weeks of prep.

The three-lift MVT

Each lift has its own minimum velocity threshold - the mean concentric velocity at which your true 1RM occurs. Population averages are useful, but your own is what matters:

  • Squat - usually 0.28 – 0.34 m/s
  • Bench press - usually 0.14 – 0.20 m/s (MPV)
  • Deadlift - usually 0.12 – 0.18 m/s

Nail down your personal MVT by pairing every tested max with a velocity recording for at least three cycles.

Off-season programming

Twelve or more weeks out, program by zone rather than by percentage. A typical week:

  1. Heavy day - top set at 0.35 – 0.45 m/s, backoffs at 0.50 – 0.60 m/s.
  2. Speed / power day - 6–10 doubles at 0.70 – 0.90 m/s.
  3. Volume day - 4–5 sets to a 25% velocity-loss cutoff.

Load auto-adjusts. Your job is to be honest with intent.

The peak block

In the final four to six weeks the goal is heavy specificity without accumulating fatigue. Use 10 to 15 percent velocity-loss cutoffs to keep every rep crisp. Reference velocities creep down as loads climb, which is expected. What you are watching for is drift - velocities dropping at the same load week over week signals overreach.

Calling openers

Two to three weeks out, run a heavy single on each lift. Log the velocity. Use your personal MVT to project the day-of 1RM.

Opener = 92 to 94 percent of projected 1RM, verified by a target velocity 15 to 25 percent above your MVT. If the last warm-up before your opener is moving faster than projected, add a kilo. Faster still, add two. Do not chase feel; chase the bar.

Meet day

Your warm-up sensor tells you exactly what your nervous system is bringing to the platform. Compare each warm-up velocity to the same load in training. A five-percent boost is common on meet day - call attempts accordingly. A drop is rare; if you see one, pull back and trust the taper.
