The readiness problem
Every hard training block eventually produces a period where the athlete looks fine, feels fine, but underperforms when it counts. The signal was there weeks earlier - no one was measuring the right thing.
Wellness questionnaires are subjective. HRV needs strict protocol. Force plates need infrastructure. Bar speed at a reference load needs a sensor and thirty seconds.
Bar speed as a biomarker
At a fixed sub-maximal load, mean concentric velocity is a repeatable, individual-specific number. It moves up when you are fresh and productive, down when you are accumulating fatigue faster than you are recovering, and it does so before your top sets fall off.
Setting your baseline
Choose one lift you train at least twice per week - usually the back squat or bench press. Choose one reference warm-up load - 60 to 70 percent of your last known 1RM. Every session, record the fastest rep of your reference set.
After two weeks you have a personal baseline. That baseline is your readiness anchor.
What a drop means
Interpret in bands:
- Down 3–5% - normal daily noise. Ignore.
- Down 5–10% - accumulated fatigue. Hold load, tighten cutoffs, protect sleep.
- Down 10–15% for two sessions in a row - you are overreaching. Deload the week.
- Down > 15% - treat as a red flag. Skip the session, check sleep, nutrition, illness, life stress.
What a rise means
A sustained rise is what a successful training block looks like. The same load is moving faster because you got stronger. That is when to test - either a true 1RM or a load-velocity profile.
Weekly workflow
The workflow is deliberately boring:
- Warm up to the reference load. Record two reps at maximum intent.
- Compare the fastest rep to your rolling seven-day average.
- Choose one of five responses above.
- Train.
