The one-sentence definition
Velocity-based training, usually shortened to VBT, is the practice of measuring how fast the barbell moves on every rep and using that number to guide load selection, set length, exercise choice and long-term programming.
That is the whole idea. Everything that follows is a consequence of taking bar speed seriously as a training variable, on par with load and volume.
Where it came from
The intellectual roots go back to Soviet-era weightlifting research in the 1960s and 70s, where coaches noticed that a lifter's readiness on any given day showed up in the speed of the classical lifts long before it showed up in the outcome of the set.
Juan José González-Badillo and his students in Spain took that observation and turned it into a research program. Their key finding, replicated many times since, is deceptively simple: for a given exercise and a given athlete, the velocity of the bar at a given load is remarkably stable, and it changes only when the athlete's true strength changes.
In other words, bar speed is an objective, non-invasive measure of intent, load and fatigue at the same time. That is why it works.
What the barbell is telling you
A well-executed rep produces a velocity trace that reflects three things at once:
- Load - heavier bars move slower. The relationship is close to linear for most compound lifts.
- Intent - trying to move the bar as fast as possible is a prerequisite; VBT assumes maximal-effort concentric.
- State - sleep, fatigue, stress and technique all show up as small shifts in velocity at the same load.
You cannot separate those three by watching the lift. You can separate them by measuring it, session after session, on the same movement.
How coaches actually use it
In practice, VBT gives you four levers you did not have before:
- Autoregulated load. If today's warm-up velocity is faster than usual, add weight. If it is slower, hold or reduce.
- Velocity-loss set termination. Stop the set when the fastest rep of that set has slowed by a defined percentage, typically 10, 20 or 30 percent.
- Zone prescription. Instead of "5 sets of 3 at 85 percent," prescribe "5 sets of 3 in the strength-speed zone."
- 1RM estimation. A short load-velocity profile predicts today's true max without a real max attempt.

What VBT is not
VBT does not replace good programming. It does not tell you which exercises to run, how to periodize a competition prep, or how to coach a bar path. Those decisions still belong to the coach and the athlete.
What it removes is guesswork about internal load. It is a measurement layer, not a training system.
